Greece Residential Improvement Program (G.R.I.P.)

Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (Reverse Mortgages)

  • Reverse mortgages are loans made by lending institutions against the equity in a home to provide cash advances.
  • No repayment is required until you sell your home, permanently move away, or the home becomes part of your estate.
  • To qualify for a reverse mortgage: all owners must be at least sixty-two (62) years old, own an approved single family home or condo that is free or nearly free of debt, and occupy home as a primary residence.
  • More information and counseling is available from the Housing Council (546-3700).

Housing Counseling

  • Housing Council staff provides information and advice to Town residents having questions and concerns regarding housing related matters, including: tenant/landlord relations, fair housing problems, and affordable housing availability.
  • Those needing counseling on housing related matters should contact the Housing Council (546-3700).

Monroe County Home Ownership Program

  • Program’s objective is to assist in all aspects of home ownership.
  • Services provided by the program include: pre-purchase counseling, post closing assistance, refinancing, home repairs and maintenance, credit and budget counseling, foreclosure prevention, and home sales.
  • In some cases, financial assistance to be used towards the purchase of a home is available.
  • Under the program, you may purchase an affordable home anywhere in Monroe County, except the City of Rochester.
  • Program eligibility based on household income.
  • Program administered for the County by Providence House Development Corporation.  (328-3228 Ext. 1319 or Ext. 1356).

Mortgage Relief Program

  • Program designed to assist low and moderate income homeowners in danger of losing their homes due to late mortgage payments.
  • Program provides counseling, loan re-negotiation, and as a last resort, secured loans up to $3,000.
  • Program funded by Greece’s Community Development Block Grant Program and administered for the Town by the Housing Council (546-3700).

Section 8 Program

  • Program provides rental assistance to low and moderate income tenants, both families and individuals, through subsidization of rents for apartments owned by participating landlords.
  • Program designed to assist those wanting to live in a better place or who wish to stay where they are now living.
  • To qualify, applicant’s maximum annual family income (from all sources) cannot exceed the limits set for the program.
  • Amount of assistance provided depends on income, family size, and composition.
  • Applications accepted only once a year due to long waiting lists, usually in the Fall.
  • Program administered by Rochester Housing Authority (697-6100).

Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP)

  • WAP is not a repair or maintenance program
  • Program objective to conserve energy through minor home repairs.
  • Eligible repairs include: addition of insulation to walls or ceiling; reduce air loss/drafts; weather-stripping and caulking around windows and doors; cracked or broken glass in windows can be repaired;  cleaning, testing, and replacement of heating systems; minor repairs as needed to ensure maximum efficiency from weatherization services. 
  • Program can be used alone or to supplement GRIP grants.
  • Eligibility for program participation based on household income.

Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP)

  • Program provides assistance for repairing or installing furnaces for income-eligible persons. Contact HEAP (753-6477). 

Bishop Sheen Foundation Programs

  • Home Ownership Program provides pre-purchase counseling and interest-free closing cost loans that enable the very lowest income families to purchase their own homes.
  • Program also helps connect people with affordable housing mortgage principal reduction grants.
  • Emergency Home Repair Program provides grants to low income home owners for critical housing repairs.
  • Program eligibility based on household income and limited to owner-occupied, single family homes.
  • Inquires should be directed to the Bishop Sheen Ecumenical Housing Foundation (461-4263). 

Home Safe Home

  • Program provides safety assessments and minor home modifications to homes occupied by owners who are 62 and older.
  • Program funded by Greece's Community Development Block Grant Program and administer for the Town by Lifespan of Greater Rochester, inc. (244-8400)
