Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as outlined in the
2020 Town Comprehensive Plan:

“The Town understands that the ongoing operation and maintenance of our infrastructure directly impacts Greece’s quality of life. In order to maximize our existing facilities, the Town is making significant investments into technology that will improve the levels of service and efficiency it provides. These investments include the increased utilization of our geographic information system (GIS) to inventory and manage our assets.“

Overview

Geographic Information System(s), (GIS)

  • GIS is a technology that is used to create, manage, analyze, and map all types of data.
  • GIS connects data to a map, integrating location data (where things are) with all types of descriptive information (what things are like there).
  • GIS creates a foundation for mapping & analysis that is used in science and almost every industry.

GIS helps the Town understand patterns, relationships, and geographic context through data and asset management integrated with Town business applications and mapping. The benefits include:

  • Better decision-making by visualizing data spatially and identifying trends.

  • Improved asset management for infrastructure such as roads, water, sewer, and public facilities.

  • Greater operational efficiency by connecting GIS with Town business systems and workflows.

  • Enhanced planning and development through accurate mapping and spatial analysis.

  • Improved public communication and transparency with maps, dashboards, and public-facing data.

  • Faster response and coordination for public works, utilities, and emergency situations.

  • Data-driven budgeting and prioritization of projects based on geographic need and impact.

Town staff participation in GIS user groups is a way to connect with communities of  GIS users in the professional public and private sector who share common interests and challenges. User groups function as forums to actively share knowledge and experience, learn about new trends and technologies within the GIS world, hear from solution providers, and create special interest workgroups.

The overall goal of Town staff user group participation is to enhance and grow GIS for the benefit of Town residents. The Town of Greece actively participates with the following GIS user groups:
